Vintage flamingos

Nee…ik heb geprobeerd om te stoppen met flamingo’s, maar ik vind ze te leuk. Zeker als ze in vintage chinoiserie achtige stijl komen, zoals deze die ik recent bij de kringloop vond. Op de achterkant zit een kaartje, in ouderwets handschrift, geniet met daarop een nummerreeks en ‘flamingo’s’. Zo’n kaartje maakt een vondst als deze nog magischer voor mij: het komt blijkbaar uit een winkel waar je prenten van flamingo’s kopen kan? Of iets dergelijks? De lijst is ooit al wit geverfd door iemand…wat nog meer vragen oproept. Wie weet in hoeveel verzamelingen deze flamingo’s al gezeten hebben. Allemaal verzamelingen die ooit stopgezet werden. Misschien wel omdat ze uit de hand aan het lopen waren. Fantastisch. Wist je trouwens dat flamingo’s roze zijn omdat ze garnaal-achtige schaaldieren eten? Hoe vet is dat! Daarom zijn ze in de dierentuin ook nooit zo roze als degene die je op National Geographic ziet. Ik pleit om die reden dat flamingo’s ook in de dierentuin die garnalen te eten moeten krijgen. Alhoewel….eigenlijk horen ze gewoon lekker in het wild te leven. Om écht vrij en rozer dan roze te kunnen zijn.

I’ve really tried to stop collecting flamingos…but they’re too beautiful not to collect. Especially when they come in vintage chinoiserie-y style, like this couple that I recently thrifted. On the back of the frame someone (with a very old-fashioned handwriting) stapled a piece of cardboard with a serial number and the word ‘flamingos’ on it. It gives a find like this a kind of extra-dimension: maybe it was for sale in an old-fashioned poster shop, who knows? Its dark wooden frame is already painted white once, which raises even more questions. Who knows in how many (dissolved) flamingo collections these guys already have been. I love little second hand puzzles like this. Did you know by the way that the shrimplike crustaceans that wild flamingos eat give them their pink colour? How cool is that! That’s why the ones in the zoo are often much paler than the ones you see on National Geographic. For that reason I would like to plea that flamingos in captivity should get to eat the same diet as their wild brothers and sisters. But then again, I think there shouldn’t be flamingos held in captivity in general. They should roam free and become as pink as they can be.
