Le Petit Nicolas

Ik leerde Le Petit Nicolas of De Kleine Nicolaas kennen op het voortgezet onderwijs, tijdens de lessen Frans. De avonturen – beleefd door de ogen van lagereschooljongen Nicolaas – zijn hilarisch, de tekeningen zo mogelijk nóg grappiger (alleen al het gezicht van het jongetje in bed op de onderste foto). De illustraties van Sempé, worden nog krachtiger doordat ze vaak geheel los op één pagina worden afgedrukt. (Sempé illustreerde overigens ook regelmatig voor The New Yorker.) De schrijver is Goscinny, die sommigen misschien weer kennen van de stripboeken Astérix. De stijl van de verhalen doet me denken aan die van Annie M.G. Schmidt en Roald Dahl: ze zijn voor kinderen leuk (de volwassenen in de verhalen worden niet gespaard), maar de onderliggende humor wordt juist vooral door volwassenen begrepen. Ik vond dit deel (waar kan het ook anders) bij de kringloop, geen idee of ze nog uitgegeven worden. Mocht je er een zien staan, meenemen, voorlezen of zelf lezen!

I learned about Le Petit Nicolas or Little Nicholas at high school, during our French lessons. The adventures – told in the first person by schoolboy Nicholas himself – are hysterical, not to mention the illustrations made by Sempé (I mean, you only need to look at the face of the boy in bed at the last picture, it’s so funny). By often just placing one tiny drawing in the corner of a blank page, Sempé’s illustrations become even more powerful. (Some people might also know him from his work for The New Yorker, by the way.) Writer of the stories is Goscinny, the man behind the Astérix cartoons. The style of story-telling reminds me of Annie M.G. Schmidt or Roald Dahl: it’s great for children (adults are often target of the book’s humour), but there’s a hidden layer of humour throughout the book that appeals to adults as well. I found this book at a thriftshop (where else?), no idea if they’re published still. If you stumble upon one in a second hand store, do take it home and read it with your children or just to have a laugh yourself!
